Hello from Tasmania

Less than four hours until the tally room opens

When I officially took up the position as the ABC’s chief elections analyst in June, I was expecting to have a bit of a breather to get my feet under the desk. Especially after a very busy year and a half that included elections in Tasmania, the Northern Territory, Queensland, the ACT, the United States, Western Australian, and most recently, the Australian federal election.

We weren’t supposed to have another state election until March next year, when South Australia went to the polls!

But Tasmania had other ideas.

In just my fourth day on the job, the state parliament passed a no-confidence motion in Premier Jeremy Rockliff, setting in chain events leading to today.

Right now I’m sitting in the Tasmanian tally room about four hours before polls close. We’ll soon find out how different the next parliament looks to the current one.

Here’s my guide to the election if you want to study up ahead of 6pm.

I’ll try to pop back in here next week post-election with a look at Tasmania and some other interesting electoral matters around the world.

Tonight though, I’ll be all over Tasmania Votes coverage on ABC News, including on the ABC News channel from 6pm (or on ABC TV if you’re in Tasmania). See you there.
